John S. Madden MBA, CPA

Mr. Madden is a Senior Associate of the First Chesapeake Group. He has been affiliated with the First Chesapeake Group for 7 years. Mr. Madden holds a bachelor’s degree from Boston College and earned a MBA from Columbia University. His career includes successful executive achievement in operations and financial functions; initiating and assimilating rapid growth of business units; broad experience in top management planning and implementation, combined with a thorough understanding of detail; and enthusiastic interest in improvement of product quality and market leadership.

Mr. Madden has assisted clients in successfully achieving major hospital projects involving modernization and expansion. These projects have included: inpatient bed expansions, modernization and expansion of general surgical suites, establishment of a specialized Heart hospital, expansion of psychiatric specialty beds, and creation of an integrated Women's Center within a hospital.

This work has included market analyses, project planning and financial feasibility analysis. In other assignments, he has aided clients in analysis and enhancement of the calculation of Medicare Wage Indexes, review of Graduate Medical Education programs, conduct of physician manpower planning, development of strategic plans, and preparation of annual cost report filings. Mr. Madden has also assisted major law firms and their clients in various litigation support activities. These have included contract disputes, anti-trust analyses, reimbursement appeals, bankruptcy litigation and taxation issues. Among the clients he has served for the First Chesapeake Group are: Memorial/Hermann Health System and St. Luke's Hospital of Houston, HCA Healthcare hospitals in Virginia and Texas, Province Healthcare hospitals, member hospitals of the Christus Health System, Washington Hospital Center, Aetna Insurance Company, and a variety of major national law firms.

In prior professional experience, Mr. Madden has served as:

  • Executive Vice President of Operations at Wexford Health Sources, Inc. in Pittsburgh, PA. In this position, he managed over fifty health care services contracts in thirteen states, totaling more than $65 million in revenue.
  • Chief Financial Officer of Glenbeigh, Inc., where he oversaw all financial activities of multiple hospital subsidiaries at ten locations in three states, comprising more than $45 million in revenue.
  • Partner-in-Charge at Arthur Young & Co. (currently Ernst & Young) in Washington, DC, where he was responsible for all consulting projects and personnel in the Washington Baltimore, and Richmond offices, totaling more than 200 advanced degree personnel. The spectrum of projects which he managed ranged from six-figure, short term evaluative analyses to multi-million dollar, turn-key implementations with assignments in finance, accounting and personnel systems to support major corporate and government organizations.
  • Partner-in-Charge at Arthur Young & Co. in Pittsburgh, PA. In this position, he was in charge of all management consulting in Western Pennsylvania.
  • Budget Manager, Systems Analyst, and Financial Analyst for Exxon Corporation subsidiaries involved in chemical manufacturing, centralized computing and research and engineering.
  • Surface Ship Line Officer in the U.S. Navy.
